As Maine’s first traditional sailing vessel built specifically for tourists, the 52-year-old Mary Day provides a few more creature comforts than her older siblings. Two bathrooms (”heads” in boat parlance) are shared among as many as 30 passengers, but the snug cabins boast nine-foot headroom, a sink and skylights. And while wannabe old salts are encouraged to hoist and lower the sails or take a turn at the helm, raising anchor is as easy as flipping a switch.

But, like other Maine windjammers, Mary Day’s biggest appeal is what she doesn’t offer: a set schedule or an electronic tether to news alerts and status updates.

“Where we’re going is a mystery that depends on the winds, the tides and my moods,” Captain Barry King promises his charges as the Mary Day slips out of Camden Harbor our first afternoon. “You never really know…and it’s all good.”
